Welcome to Mundaring Hills Open Studios 2025

It might be chilly outside, but don’t mistake this as a time of hibernation for our artists. Inside studios, ateliers and workshops we are busily creating in readiness for Mundaring Hills Open Studios 2025.

This year’s event is set to be the biggest yet, with 81 artists across 30 studios and 4 venues, encompassing a wonderful range of art practices including ceramics, painting, sculpture, glass work, jewellery, drawing, photography, textiles and mixed media. What a cornucopia of delight for the senses!

Whilst we are in the throes of preparation for Open Studios, some of our energetic artists also have exhibitions, either current or upcoming. If you can’t wait for Spring, then please consider heading to the hills to check out this sampling of exhibitions:

Ric Burkitt

Far Horizons by Ric Burkitt is a series of landscape paintings reflecting observations in the urban environment within an hour’s drive from the artist’s home, responding to the sky and land as they meet at the horizon.  Ric explores the often-overlooked relationship between the sky and the land. This collection reminds us of how we often focus on one element or the other without fully acknowledging their dynamic connection. The sky, though vast and empty, is full of potential—charged with light and shadow that shift over time. Meanwhile, the land is a tangible, textured entity, constantly being reshaped and defined by the atmosphere and by human hands.

The exhibition runs from Saturday, June 21, 2025 until Sunday, August 10, 2025.

Ric is giving an artist’s talk on Saturday 26 July 1-2 pm

Stacy Gardoll

Stacy Gardoll’s bold and beautiful botanical paintings are also on show at Mundaring Arts Centre, in her exhibition entitled: The Flora of Western Australia- an Artistic Impression.

Stacy's work illustrates the vibrant and diverse world of Western Australia’s unique flora and celebrates the beauty, resilience, and diversity of the State’s endemic plant species. Each artwork captures the intricate details and vibrant colours of endemic flora, from the delicate Eucalyptus Rhodantha and Macrocarpa blossoms, to the distinctive Hakea, and rare Grevillea species. The collection brings to life the textures, patterns, and hues that define the region's natural heritage.

Stacy will be also be giving an artist’s talk on Saturday 2nd August between 1 and 2 pm.

Melissa De Winter

Last week saw the opening night of Melissa De Winter’s debut solo exhibition-Reclaimed- at Ellenbrook Arts HQ wherein she explores life’s cyclical nature through the evocative medium of encaustic (hot beeswax), re-imagining waste and decay as sources of regeneration and beauty. With a fondness for repurposed materials and organic forms, Reclaimed is a tactile celebration of nature’s rhythm — decay, death, and ultimately, rebirth.

“Each piece is a story of renewal,” says Melissa. “This show is about seeing endings not as final, but as part of a wider, living system — everything is connected and part of a larger story.”

Through rich textures and embedded narratives, Reclaimed invites viewers to consider their relationship with the environment, time, and transformation. Wax, pigment, found objects and salvaged substrates combine to honour the often unseen and undervalued beauty in what is broken or left behind.

Reclaimed is on now until August 3rd

Liz Berry with Rebecca Tester, Lee Woodcock and Jo Zeelenberg are combining their talents for an exhibition coming up October- more on this next time-, and we have Jen Kerr's Picnic Terrain to look forward to in August.
