Bernard Kerr is a Perth hills-based ceramic artist who works in both stoneware and porcelain. Born and raised in WA, Bernard draws inspiration from the natural world and the Western Australian landscape such as those based on the ancient, eroded landforms and the wildflowers that have evolved in them. Another line of inquiry investigates the relationships between image and object by referencing the history of painting and sculpture in the medium of ceramics. Bernard’s works in a diverse way that encompasses installation, sculpture and functional pieces that are thought-provoking, celebrate craft skills and articulate the elements and principles of art and design Bernard's artistic journey began with working as a teacher of visual arts in secondary schools and subsequently lectured at university in art education, sculpture and ceramics. Bernard was awarded a master’s degree in visual arts majoring in ceramics.
He now lectures at North Metropolitan TAFE in ceramics He recently held a major solo exhibition titled ‘Coincident’ at Midland Junction Arts Centre as part of the Indian Ocean Craft’s Triennial (IOTA) and also featured in a major exhibition ‘Wedge’ at Fremantle Arts Centre. Bernard in President of the Ceramic Arts Association of WA and has just finished his major role as Director of the Australian Ceramics Triennale held in Fremantle.
