Melissa De Winter

The Hive Studio

Drawing, Encaustic, Sculpture, Painting

Melissa’s practice is grounded in a deep belief that everything in life is connected. From the emotional pull of a simple bouquet to the quiet transformation of decay into new growth, her work explores the unseen threads that link people, place and the natural world. Through botanicals, biological forms and layered landscapes, Melissa invites viewers to reflect on their place within this shared ecosystem and the responsibility that comes with it. Working from her home studio in the beautiful bush setting, she is driven by curiosity, experimentation and a deep love of nature.

Her journey into encaustic painting was shaped by her experience as an apiarist, where working closely with bees sparked a fascination with wax as both a material and a storyteller. Using molten beeswax fused with heat, she builds up luminous layers that hold both structure and spontaneity—each piece evolving in an intuitive, almost alchemical process. There is a quiet magic in this method. Wax and fire combine to create surfaces that cannot be fully controlled, only guided, resulting in works that feel alive with movement and depth.

Committed to sustainability, Melissa often incorporates reclaimed and recycled materials into her practice. Melissa is passionate about sharing this experience. Visitors are warmly invited into her studio to see the process firsthand—whether for a conversation, a demonstration, or a hands-on workshop.
