Painting
Ric Burkitt, a former graphic designer, now full-time artist and part-time painting teacher, works from his studio in Stoneville. His practice explores a variety of styles and mediums, but he is best known for his striking and dynamic abstract works that explore the expressive potential of non-representational painting.
His current body of work includes landscape paintings that evoke the mood and atmosphere of Stoneville’s surrounding countryside. Through the use of colour, line, shape, and texture, he aims to forge emotional connections and convey impressions and insights that will resonate with viewers. Working in oils and acrylics on canvas and board, he explores a variety of approaches to the more traditional landscape, as well as to the challenges of the semi-abstract, where the ‘essence of the complicated can often be found, veiled in the mundane’.
In 2025, Ric won the Ellenbrook Arts Prize and was a finalist in the Perth Royal Art Prize for Landscape. He also held a solo exhibition of landscape paintings (FAR HORIZONS) at the Mundaring Arts Centre from June to August last year. Ric completed a BA Fine Art (with Distinction) at Curtin University of Technology in 1992.
This year, Ric is Artist in Residence at the Midland Junction Arts Centre from 16 October to 6 December, and his Stoneville studio will only be open to the public on weekends through MHOS. The Residency includes exhibitions of his work and workshops in abstract landscape painting.
