Shelley Piang-Nee

Atelier SPN

Sculpture, Mixed Media, Visual Artist, Woodwork

Artist Bio Shelley is a West Australian artist whose practice spans woodturning, sculpture, and a range of other media — united by a single, quiet obsession: the pursuit of form that feels inevitable. Trained at Midland TAFE in Visual Arts and with a decade of experience at the lathe, she has developed a body of work distinguished by elegance, patience, and a deep respect for material. Her pieces do not announce themselves. They settle. They belong. Collected by galleries, gift shops, collectives, and private collectors across the region, her work speaks for itself quietly and with confidence. Shelley is drawn to the organic — to forms that echo the natural world, that carry the memory of growth, weather, and time. There is nothing forced in her work. Each piece follows the logic of the material itself, shaped by what the wood or stone or earth has always held within it. Beauty, in her view, is not something added to a surface. It lives inside the material, and the maker's task is simply to find it.

Her work has been exhibited at the Mundaring Arts Centre, and her sculptural practice continues to grow with the same attentiveness that has always defined her making. In her current practice, Shelley brings a curiosity that refuses to stand still — always asking new questions of familiar materials, always willing to follow a new form wherever it leads. It is this restless devotion to the making process that gives her work its life, and her practice its ongoing sense of discovery.
