Community Benefits as MHOS Grows.

Thanks to artist Craig McKeough for this great wrap-up.

Since its low-key beginnings with just 10 artists in 2009, Mundaring Hills Open Studios (MHOS) is now established as a key cultural event on the local calendar.

It is one of the longest running art trails in Western Australia, and in 2025 featured 81 artists at 30 studios across the Mundaring shire.

The event has been an important platform for Hills artists to show their work and elevate their art careers.

Equally, it has proved its value as an event which benefits the wider Mundaring community, bringing thousands of visitors from elsewhere in the metropolitan area and beyond to experience the unique Perth Hills environment.

In 2025, almost 70% of people who joined the art trail were from outside the Hills area, and 87% of them said they spent money enjoying local cafes, restaurants or hotels.

Close to half of the businesses who sponsored the event reported a direct increase in sales as a result of their advertisement in the event guide.

About 18,000 glossy full-colour brochures are distributed throughout Perth and regional towns, providing wide exposure for the event and the sponsors who help make it happen.

More key statistics from 2025:

  • We recorded more than 17,000 individual studio visits, with people visiting an average of six studios

  • Attendance was up 8% on the previous year

  • An amazing $670,000 worth of art was sold, up 42% on the previous year

  • An impressive 74% of visitors purchased an artwork

  • 88% of visitors said they would recommend MHOS to family or friends

MHOS has always been a community-based event, driven by the artists themselves and embraced by local people and businesses as a showcase of the unique creativity of the Hills.

We appreciate the loyalty of all our sponsors, in particular the Shire of Mundaring, which has supported us with a three-year funding agreement, and Bendigo Community Bank Mundaring, which has provided grant funding for specific purposes. This funding has enabled us to significantly expand our promotion of the event and gain wider exposure through social media and other advertising.

Seventeen years on from that low-key beginning, MHOS is recognised as a must-do event for art lovers and anyone who enjoys a relaxing day or weekend in the beautiful natural environment of the Perth Hills.

We’re committed to maintaining the quality and growing the reputation of the event as we continue to look for new and innovative ways to collaborate with the community and deliver on our vision to build connections through art and creative spaces in the Hills.
