Jane Newton

Sawyers Valley Pottery Studio

Ceramics. Sculpture

Janes passion for working with clay began in 1969, while she was a student nurse at St Thomas Hospital London. During this time Jane was mentored by a master potter who introduced her to the basic techniques and skills necessary for working withclay. This experience ignited her lifelong passion with clay.In 1973, Jane travelled overland from the UK to Australia, where she continued her artistic journey. She enrolled in the Midland TAFE as a student, completing her education in ceramics. This period refined her craft and expanded her understanding of clay.

After moving in 1974 to the hills, Janes Husband Greg ,built a pottery studio for her. The studio quickly became a central to Jane's practice., a creative sanctury, a place where clay is transformed into timeless works of art. Jane is a devoted studio potter, recognised for her stunning ceramics, that range from functional pieces to striking sculptural artworks.

She employs a variety of techniques and styles, with a particular emphasis on form and colour. Creating her larger works demands sinificant time and skill, which involves the intricate process of throwing, turning and firing. The beauty of Jane's surroundings deeply influence her work. She draws inspiration from the Jarrah Forest, the rich and vibrant colours of the bush, especially noticable at sundown, and the soaring majesty of wedge tailed eagles. These elements are reflected in the expressive quality and unique character of her ceramics
